SurgiCase Orthopaedics
When did you start your career in Materialise?
Since I’ve got biomedical education, most part of my career connecting with medicine somehow. I’d worked in several companies before I met Materialise in autumn of 2005.
What were the most significant steps in your career in Materialise?
Approximately one year ago I was invited to join the orthopedics projects. Well, it so happened that I am leading its Kiev conversion team now, which become bigger, more professional and takes big part in the project.
What motivates you? Inspires you?
The opportunities to make world better, help people when they need help, make something wonderful and useful that everyone enjoys and appreciates. That is not an easy task to do, but we are strong and forceful to make it happen.
What do you like most of all about your job?
The loveliest thing is that I am at the cross of the different fields: medicine, engineering, development, researching, and management. So can compare different people’s views and approaches, can combine, and coordinate it for the most efficient way to achieve goals.
What do you like about working at Materialise?
I think good environment and inner climate which are the norm in Materialise, can improve working process, motivate and encourage people to follow the mission of Materialise.( …Innovating product development for a better and healthier world…)
What challenges did you face when starting at your project?
There were a lot of them. The most interesting is to create a team of professionals, in really short terms just from alpha to omega.
Tell us about the project you are working on now.
During the AAOS in San Francisco early March, Materialise officially launched the new system SurgiCase Orthopaedics, which offers a medical image-based environment for orthopaedic surgery planning. As is the case in the dental and CMF fields, the planning is linked to surgical guides for use in the operating theatre, manufactured with the help of RP. With this technology, we have partnered with Biomet to launch “Signature”, a Biomet version of SurgiCase for knee replacement surgery.
What are the specific areas of knowledge, required to work on the project?
Knowledge in engineering, preferably with a background in biomedical sciences. For example a degree of engineering with experience through study-courses or work experience in the field of biomedical sciences, medicine, dentistry, biomechanics, medical imaging, biomaterials…
What would you say is the number of skills that you possess that you believe had the biggest effect on Materialise?
Creative and innovative frame of mind persons, responsible and talented people are always welcome in Materialise. I believe those had an influence at the beginning and do now as well.
What is the most rewarding experience in your field?
Some experience with CAD and/or medical image processing software is a plus of course. The experience in servicing, supporting of medical devices or systems.
What advice do you have for candidates, applying for job in Materialise?
If you are passionate, know what you want, with a good background – there are not impossible things for you! Just dear it and it will happen!

Give facts about your education.
I’ve studied in Kyiv gymnasium N. 32 till 9 class, and then in the lyceum no.145.
After that I’ve studied in Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University, faculty of cybernetics and graduated with master’s degree.
What is your work experience at Materialise?
Started in the end of 2002 year as a junior developer on the medical software. After some time, I’ve had an opportunity to become project manager for minor releases of Mimics. Later on my team has extended with CMF developers, and on the same type I’ve become a project manager of major Mimics releases as well. During that time I’ve also led first Materialise academy. Team continued to grow, and after a while I was managing already a few medical software teams. Starting from 2008 year, I become a Medical software department manager.
Describe a typical day for you at work.
I manage a team of … 27 people.
A typical day for me … Every day is pretty different, so I don’t have “typical” day. The common for all days is that day starts with greeting team members, and checking e-mails. And at least half of the day is covered by different types of meetings.
I focus on … I try to focus on people questions/problems. I believe that great goals can be achieved only by teams that have healthy environment, where people can rely on each other.
What do you like about your job?
I like that there are plenty of challenges in my job, and that there are no simple answers on what and how to do. Also, I like that during the day you can see problems from different angles – development, testers, managers. This helps in being more open minded.
What do you like about working at Materialise?
I like what we do. Working on medical software and seeing results of it makes me proud. And the fact that medical software is not so common in the software world helps to feel uniqueness of the job. Also I like that company is growing, and there are many opportunities for changes, although they are not always easy to do.
What has helped you to develop yourself?
Discussions with more experienced people, observations of their way of working and example of development of my manager Vlad Kozachenko.
What are your goals for future at Materialise?
To have strong application engineers team in Kyiv and increase of Materialise Kyiv role in the Materialise context.
